FINAL RESULTS BRACKETS QUALIFYING STANDINGS LAS VEGAS – In late February, Tom Daugherty of Riverview, Florida, became eligible to bowl events on the Professional Bowlers Association’s PBA50 Tour, which is reserved for athletes age 50 and older. Despite still actively competing on the PBA Tour, where he is a four-time titlist and major champion, Daugherty decided he’d begin bowling some PBA50 events as well, figuring that more opportunities to compete would mean more opportunities to win and bolster his resume for eventual consideration for the PBA and United States Bowling Congress Halls of Fame. That decision certainly seems to have been a good one as the 50-year-old right-hander won the 2025 USBC Senior Masters at Sam’s Town Bowling Center in Las Vegas on Sunday to collect his first PBA50 win and major. Daugherty achieved the feat thanks to a 233-185 win over USBC and PBA Hall of Famer Parker Bohn III of Jackson, New Jersey, who qualified second for the stepladder finals and earned his berth in the title match after defeating No. 4 seed Mika Koivuniemi of Traverse City, Michigan, 247-232 during the semifinal match. This is Zavala’s second win at Yorktown Lanes after winning the 2021 PWBA Greater Cleveland Open in the same building, although this one is much sweeter after defeating Olivia Komorowski of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, in the title match, 207-173 “It feels amazing,” said Zavala. “It feels like another dream off the wish list has come true. ” She had a slow start to match play, going 4-4 in the first round and sitting on the cut line for the stepladder, but came back in Round 2 with seven wins and only one loss to clinch the top seed for the finals. Standing in the way of the birthday title was Komorowski, making her first stepladder appearance on the PWBA Tour in her second season after a successful collegiate career at Wichita State. Komorowski held the early advantage against Zavala, who opened to start the match and then added a second open in the fifth frame that could have allowed Komorowski to stay ahead. In a rematch from last year’s BowlTV Classic title match where Tan won, it was New who came out on top this time to earn her third career PWBA title. But getting revenge wasn’t on New’s mind at any point during the run to the title. “I was just focused on ball motion and seeing the right shape,” said New. That level of focused helped New, who qualified as the No. 2 seed after going 9-3 in two rounds of match play and averaged over 233, eventually facing off against Shannon Pluhowsky of Dayton, Ohio, in the semifinal match. Pluhowsky was making her way up the ladder after qualifying as the No. 4 seed in search of her fifth PWBA title. Neither competitor in the semifinal match was able to pull away early as New opened in the second frame while Pluhowsky couldn’t string strikes together despite multiple good pocket hits. DETROIT – For the second year in a row, more than 225 of the nation’s top young bowlers have traveled to the Greater Detroit area to compete in the United States Bowling Congress U22 Masters and Queens, which kick off on Friday and run through Memorial Day. Unlike last year’s inaugural event where each tournament was held in a different bowling center until the stepladder finals, the 2025 U22 Masters and Queens both will be contested in their entirety at historic Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park. Each event’s official practice sessions will take place on Friday morning with tournament competition at both the Masters and Queens getting underway later that day with seven games of A Squad qualifying starting at 11 a. m. Eastern and B Squad following with their own seven-game blocks at 5 p. m. Eastern. All competitors will return for a second seven-game qualifying block on Saturday with B Squad hitting the lanes at 10 a. m. Eastern and A Squad wrapping things up at 4 p. m. Eastern. After the completion of 14 games of qualifying, each tournament’s field will be whittled down to just 32 competitors. A win for Sin meant she would achieve the Triple Crown of major titles (Queens, U. S. Women’s Open and PWBA Tour Championship). The title match began as disastrously as it could for Sin, opening three times in the first six frames and starting over 50 pins behind Barnes, who stayed clean and threw a turkey in frames two through five. Two members of the Professional Women’s Bowling Association Hall of Fame Class of 2025 were celebrated during their induction ceremony Wednesday evening at the Suncoast Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Marianne DiRupo of Matthews, North Carolina, and Liz Johnson of Niagara Falls, New York, were elected to the PWBA Hall of Fame in the Performance category, with both in attendance at Wednesday night’s ceremony. DiRupo was the 1992 PWBA Rookie of the Year and earned her first of eight titles at the 1993 Ebonite Three Rivers Open. “When I won my first title, I was very fortunate to have my mom, her best friend and my family there,” said DiRupo. “I’m not even sure I could describe it with words. It was also the same day that I was given the Rookie of the Year award. I don’t think I could ask for anything more. ” DiRupo would go on to win three majors in her career, the 1997 Hammer Players Championship, the 2002 Miller High Life National Players Championship and the 2004 USBC Queens. “Winning those two Players Championships will always go down as a soft spot in my heart,” DiRupo said. The U12 division will feature 15 teams competing for a national championship while the U15 division will have 16 teams. The right-hander qualified as the No. 2 seed for the stepladder after leading the majority of qualifying, but losing that top seed fueled her more. “I was trying so hard to not lose that top spot,” said Ng. “My main issue was the carry, and I just couldn’t find it (during the last few games). ” Carry was no issue for Ng in the semifinal match, where she faced Bryanna Coté of Tucson, Arizona, who was making a climb up the ladder after qualifying as the No. 5 seed. The Singaporean bowler started the match with five strikes in the first six frames, holding control early even as Coté began striking into the middle of the match. Three straight spares after a small string of strikes weren’t enough for Coté as Ng never let up and cruised to the title match, 226-192, ending Coté’s run. The ballot for the USBC Board election had four candidates slated by the USBC Nominating Committee – Cindy Akin of Placerville, California; Zachary Boulanger of Green Bay, Wisconsin; Chrissie Kent of Newark, New York; and Nathan Shock of Brighton, Colorado – for three open board positions. On the first ballot, incumbent Kent (564 votes) was reelected, with Boulanger (472 votes) and Shock (436 votes) also gaining election. Akin received 313 votes. A candidate had to receive a majority of the 611 votes cast to be elected. Additionally, Team USA athletes elected Mark Van Meter of Albuquerque, New Mexico, to the USBC Board. The newly elected board members begin their three-year terms Aug. 1, 2025. These changes aim to provide greater clarity, reduce costs and streamline the inspection process for centers nationwide. Bowling centers now will be classified into one of four certification tiers based on the percentage of compliance with USBC specifications as outlined in the USBC Equipment Specifications Manual. The certification levels are determined through inspections conducted by USBC National Lane Inspectors. Since 2023, more than 2,600 centers have been inspected, with 72% of those centers achieving the highest tier and fewer than 2% falling into the lowest category. The certification tiers are: Gold – centers that meet at least 90% of all specifications (currently 73% of inspected centers). Silver – centers that meet 80-89. 9% of all specifications (currently 22% of inspected centers). Bronze – centers that meet 70-79. 9% of all specifications (currently 4% of inspected centers). Standard – centers that meet less than 70% of all specifications (currently 2% of inspected centers). The annual award recognizes one female and one male USBC Youth bowler for exemplary academic accomplishments, community involvement and contributions to the sport of bowling outside of league or tournament play. Winners are chosen on submitted applications, and each will receive a $1,500 scholarship. Massey became the seventh competitor to bowl a perfect game at the Raising Cane’s River Center in 2025, and he delivered games of 300, 189 and 166 during the set for a 655 series. ARLINGTON, Texas – Jack Weaver of Pella, Iowa, has been chosen by the United States Bowling Congress Youth Advisory Group as the Annual Zeb Scholarship recipient for 2025. The Annual Zeb Scholarship recognizes a USBC Youth member who has achieved academic success and gives back to their community through service. The recipient, who must be a junior or senior in high school, receives a $2,500 scholarship. Weaver, 18, is the first person from Iowa to earn the scholarship since it was first awarded in 2005. When asked what his initial reaction was when he was informed he had won the scholarship, Weaver said, “I was very surprised. I had just got done telling my mom that I was starting to think I might not get any scholarships, and then we got the call from USBC. So, getting that call was very surprising and exciting. ” The scholarship will be put to good use as Weaver plans on attending Iowa State University to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering. Weaver is completing his senior year at Pella Community High School in Pella, Iowa, where he carries a 3. 85 GPA while also taking dual-credit college courses. ARLINGTON, Texas – United States Bowling Congress Hall of Famer and 1959 USBC Masters champion Ray Bluth died Friday, April 11, at the age of 97 in St. Louis. Bluth, who won two USBC Open Championships Eagles and earned three wins on the Professional Bowlers Association Tour, is a member of five halls of fame, including the USBC and PBA. In addition to being a great champion, Bluth was known as a longtime bowling center proprietor in the St. Louis area and as one of the sport’s greatest ambassadors. Bluth also was the last surviving member of the famed Budweiser team that consisted of fellow hall of famers Don Carter, Tom Hennessey, Pat Patterson and Dick Weber. On March 12, 1958, the Budweisers rolled an American Bowling Congress record 3,858 three-game series in league play in north St. Louis. The mark was 61 pins better than the previous record of 3,797, which was shot in 1937 by another St. Louis team, the Hermann Undertakers. The 3,858 total averaged out to more than 771 pins per man, or 257 per game for 15 games.
